Recovery Week...

While this recovery week has hit at a good time regarding scheduling (read: finding someone to watch the spawn) it's come at a bad time for my mood. I'm like a caged animal right now... caged w/ two wild crazy 4yo spawn that I'd like to eat just so I don't have to listen to the general craziness! ha ha (before you get your panties in a bunch I clearly love my spawn and would NEVER eat them.)

I KNOW the recovery stuff is part of the deal (and is highly beneficial), but I've always been outright TERRIBLE at recovery be it a single workout or a full on week. I always push too hard in the workouts and usually 'feel good' so I throw an extra workout in. This coached thing is going to really going to MAKE me do this and HELP ME to see the true benefits of it.

Now if I could get these kids to take a recovery week! DAMN!

One of the reasons that I exercise is to burn off tension, bring me down a few notches and help me cope with the craziness of kids. The sheer volume of it has already made me want to put on my shoes and RUN AWAY about 50 times and it's ONLY 9:30 in the a.m. Thank GOD Coach let me swim today! Mama needs a good workout. Time with my head underwater sounds about right!

I dropped my gym membership to move those funds over to coaching... well, the reality has already hit that that means running outside 100% of the time through the winter. Hmm. Northeast winter, curvy roads, snow plows... doesn't matter how much bright/reflective wear I wear I'm libel to get mowed over by a snow plow if there is fresh snow.

I have been spin certified for years now and never used it ... basically because I'm a huge chicken shit. I used to get up and talk in front of hundreds of people (in a past life) and while it was nerve wracking I did it, but I feel paralyzed to get on a spin bike in front of say 25 people. What's with that? My main problem isn't the workout.. I know I can make people work / sweat and generally suffer. It's the damn music. Putting it to music! UGH! Music people like. I had the exact same playlist on my ipod for OVER TWO YEARS!! TWO!! Over and over again I listened to the same music and it didn't bother me a bit. Also.. most of my music is explicit. CRAP! Anyway... 2011 is the year of awesomeness right? Time to get over this BS! And what a perfect time. I need a treadmill... don't want to pay for it... let's do this thing. So I start teaching spinning in a couple of weeks. I did a practice spin for my 50 min class last night. Worked up a good sweat, but my music ended at 34 mins. I've got a lot of work to do to get some playlists and profiles together. Hmm.. think I could just play music and wing it? So put a little prayer out there that I don't freeze up and that my music somewhat goes with my profiles.... oh and that the class members are merciful as I work out the kinks! Everyone starts somewhere right. Come on this isn't rocket science people! :)

  1. Hey girl! I run all winter, mostly outside. The snow in the UP is outstanding (300+ inches a year) but its manageable. I recommend getting a pair of Yaktrax, ice spikes, or stabilicers- I used to not wear any of these but started last winter without looking back. There's also some really good water carriers that keep from freezing (check out Nathan's winter line) or wear your water bottle carrier under a fleece. I wrote a few posts about winter running last year. It's totally doable and can be really fun!!! (http://megankillian.wordpress.com/2009/12/03/oh-the-weather-outside-is-frightful/)

  2. Oh don't get me wrong!! I LOVE running all winter, but the roads here are windy and sketchy when I'm not battling a snow plow! :) ha It's nice to have the back up option... and I forgot the BIGGEST part of the yeah freeby.. this place has a pool.. so I should be able to get my FOURTH swim day in no problemo!

Best of luck with the teaching! Music is a big part of *liking* a spinning class for me... I'm sure you'll figure out some kick-ass playlists! As for running in the snow, I hear ya! I'm in NYC and though things get plowed here fairly quickly, I live in a suburban part of Queens that can get DUMPED on in the winter... the plows push it all up on the sidewalks too... which makes things interesting. Good luck on those roads and be careful out there!

You know what is great music to spin to and you don't have to worry about they style because it's really no one's style but everyone's style? Blue Grass. The rhythms are perfect for spin - they totally energize!! you can find some slows too - and lot's of builds - I HIGHLY recommend it...try it spinning or for tempo runs! It would be perfect for your class - check it out!

  6. Fingers crossed we get little snow this year!!! Last year wasn't too bad actually. Hoping we get a repeat or nicer!

  7. That's awesome about the spin classes! I always thought that would be fun to teach them. Don't worry about the music too much - I'm sure people will be too busy sweating it out to really care too much! I think the most important thing is to be upbeat and keep everyone motivated. Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Oh, and my music-related observation as a spin-class participant:
There was only one spin class that I hated because of the music, and that was because the teacher taught the entire 1-hour class to techno music. NOT like techno-remixes of popular songs, but the techno that literally just sounds like a beat with sound effects... I think as long as you steer away from that, you'll be good (at least in my book!) :)

  8. Good for you for getting out there and starting to teach. I've considered getting my certification to teach, but I'm a little worried that what I'd like in a class, others wouldn't. :) It's silly and definitely holding me back, but what can you do?

  9. That is an awesome plan to get a free gym membership! I worked in the daycare once a week at one of my gyms in exchange for a membership and that worked out great! Haven't found a place willing to do trade like that where I live now, though. I pretty much have to have a treadmille for running in the winter here because the air gets really bad. Bla!

Good luck with the teaching! I've always thought that would be fun too, though I don't know if I'm talkative enough to be able to do it. Just make sure you have a good veriety of music, style and tempo. I love running to Muse and Foo Foghters and I think you could always throw in some Queen songs! Anything that has a good build to it seems like would work good for spin class. Anyway, have fun!

  10. I'm wondering what I'm going to do this winter too....seeing how its looking like I won't have a world class mountain in my backyard anymore and I'm not super psyched on the gym idea (I hate commitment). :( Its going to be interesting. Good luck with the spin thing. Share your playlists! I always struggle with workout music. Wish I could come to your classes.

  11. I bet your like everyone else and hate the dreadmill (except me, but thats not the point ;-)) but I found my dreadmill at a garage sale for $25, though you like running outdoors, sometimes we just cant and you can get a "real nice used clothes hanger" from someone real cheap

  12. Oh my gosh... do you really have snow already?! Tell me you are kidding. Is that really snow?!

  13. No we don't have snow! yet! :)

  14. You might hate me for this...I love snow...and I want a lot of it... But I have always ran all winter without much problem at all. One thing I do is I just switch from running shoes to XC skis if it gets too bad - but I have skiing right out my back door, so I am lucky for that.

HEY are you going to be at Quassy? I think i am too!

  15. Mandy.. I like running in the snow too.. but around here it's not too safe! :)

I'll be at Quassy!! Let's be sure to connect this time!

  16. You'll do fine in your first spin class. My class is way more forgiving if we know that a teacher is new!

  17. Thanks Kim! I hope you are right! I went to a class today that most of the people I will be teaching took and it was nice to meet them before my 'big day'. :)
